Identify Company Purpose
By RISE Business Framework · Created by Gary Harper and Brandon McCurdy · Reviewed
A company purpose is the reason a business exists beyond making money. RISE identifies it with the Company Purpose Statement worksheet. You list what the business loves, its gift to the world and what it wants to be remembered for. Then you distill those lists into one company purpose statement.
How RISE does it
- The worksheet mirrors the personal purpose page with past, present and future columns.
- Each column has a prompt and room for eight bullets.
- Below the columns is one capture box for the final statement.
- The finished statement is what the Key Purpose Indicator is derived from.
Identify Company Purpose is one of four tools in Long-Term Vision, part of the Inspiration quadrant of the RISE Business Framework.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write a company purpose statement?
List what your business loves, its gift to the world and how it wants to be remembered. Look for the common thread and write it as one short sentence.
What is the difference between a purpose statement and a mission statement?
A purpose statement says why the business exists. In RISE, the purpose then feeds a Key Purpose Indicator that measures whether it is being fulfilled.
What are examples of company purpose statements?
The RISE workbook cites Bombas, "Everyday goods that do good," and Toms Shoes, "A more equitable world."
