Skills Assessment
By RISE Business Framework · Created by Gary Harper and Brandon McCurdy · Reviewed
A skills assessment checks whether a person has the knowledge, skills and experience a job requires. In RISE it is the Hands and comes third, after desire and behavior. Four questions cover the ability to train others, sector experience, role experience and delivering results that achieve goals 90% of the time or more.
How RISE does it
- Determines whether the person has the knowledge, skills and experience to do the job.
- Comes after the Desire and Behavioral Assessments.
- Sets clear bars: 1 year or more in the sector and role, 90% goal achievement.
- Asks whether the person could train someone else in the role.
Skills Assessment is one of four tools in Talent Optimization, part of the Resources quadrant of the RISE Business Framework.

- 3Do you deliver results that achieve goals 90% of the time or more?
- 4Do you have more than 1 year of experience in this role?
“The Hands symbolize the tangible skills and experience that individuals bring to their work. It's the toolbox that enables them to excel in their roles.”Gary Harper

Frequently asked questions
How do you assess an employee's skills?
Ask about results and experience, not just credentials. RISE asks whether they can train others and hit goals 90% of the time or more. It also asks about 1 year or more in the sector and role.
Why ask if someone can train others in their role?
If a person can teach the role, they understand it deeply. It also protects your business, since their knowledge can be passed on.
