Desire Assessment
By RISE Business Framework · Created by Gary Harper and Brandon McCurdy · Reviewed
A desire assessment measures whether a person genuinely wants a role, not just whether they can do it. In RISE it is the Heart and always comes first. You review the job description, then ask four questions about emotional reward, priority, quality of work and energy from the position.
How RISE does it
- The first of the four assessments: start with the Heart.
- Determines whether a candidate or team member desires to fill the role.
- Begins by reviewing the job description.
- Uses four direct questions about the position.
Desire Assessment is one of four tools in Talent Optimization, part of the Resources quadrant of the RISE Business Framework.

Desire Assessment questions (Heart)
Review the job description, then ask:
- 1Does this position give you an emotional reward to do the job?
- 2Is this position high on your priority list?
- 3Do you produce quality work?
- 4Do you get energy from this position?

Frequently asked questions
How do you measure an employee's motivation for a role?
Ask directly about the role itself. RISE asks whether it gives emotional reward, is high on their priority list, gets quality work from them and gives them energy.
Why assess desire before skills?
Skills can be taught, but desire is hard to create. RISE starts with the Heart so you don't place a skilled person in a seat they don't want.
