The Resources Quadrant
By RISE Business Framework · Created by Gary Harper and Brandon McCurdy · Reviewed
Resources is the first quadrant of the RISE Business Framework. It covers the time, money and people that turn an idea into a business: who owns what, whether the right person is in each seat, how people are developed, and whether the finances are clean. It is complete when the business pays its own expenses and profits every month.
Every business starts in Resources. The work here is making the business self-sustaining: clear roles, the right people in the right seats, and financial records that tell the truth on demand.
RISE organizes the quadrant into four topics with four tools each. Finance sits here on purpose. RISE treats the P&L, budget and variance report as core operating tools, not something left to the accountant.
“An idea becomes a business when time, money, and resources are dedicated to bringing it to life. The resource quadrant is complete when a business is self-sustaining, can pay its own expenses and makes a profit each month.”The RISE Business Lifecycle

How Resources is scored
The RISE Business Assessment rates these four statements from 1 (not yet) to 3 (dialed in), for a Resources score out of 12. RISE uses 10 or more in Resources, Inspiration and Systems as the bar for moving into Engagement.
- R1We hire and manage our team using an assessment tool such as Predictive Index, DISC, or KOLBE.
- R2We have a structured, ongoing program for developing team members after they are hired.
- R3We assign ownership for each process in the business to a single team member so accountability is clear.
- R4We keep our financial records organized and clean and can generate accurate reports when needed.

Frequently asked questions
What does the R in RISE stand for?
Resources: the time, money and people a business runs on. It is the first of the four RISE quadrants, followed by Inspiration, Systems and Engagement.
When is the Resources quadrant complete?
When the business is self-sustaining: it pays its own expenses and makes a profit each month. That is the point where Inspiration becomes the next constraint.
Why is finance part of a business operating framework?
Because you cannot run a business you cannot measure. RISE puts pro formas, budgets, P&Ls and variance reports in the first quadrant so owners make decisions from real numbers.
