Hire & Onboard

By RISE Business Framework · Created by Gary Harper and Brandon McCurdy · Reviewed

Hiring and onboarding is selecting the right person and setting them up to succeed from day one. In RISE, you use the 9-Box at this stage to name where a candidate or team member sits. Potential runs one to three up the side and performance runs one to three across the bottom.

How RISE does it

  • The 9-Box at this stage is for naming, not yet for action.
  • Vertical axis: Potential, one to three.
  • Horizontal axis: Performance, one to three.
  • Tied back to the Heart, Head, Hands and Feet assessments.

Hire & Onboard is one of four tools in Talent Development, part of the Resources quadrant of the RISE Business Framework.

Frequently asked questions

How do you evaluate a new hire?

Rate their potential and performance 1-3 and place them on the 9-Box. RISE uses the Heart, Head, Hands and Feet assessments to inform both ratings.

What is a Star on the 9-Box?

A Star scores three on both potential and performance. RISE prescribes promoting them and gives them the largest share of development budget.
